Bangladeshi student joins Rosatom’s ‘Icebreaker of Knowledge’ expedition to the North Pole

A Bangladeshi student has joined the seventh edition of Rosatom’s international scientific and educational expedition, “Icebreaker of Knowledge,” which departed from Murmansk for the North Pole on Wednesday.

Md. Malekul Salehin Prottoy is representing Bangladesh after winning the prestigious international Icebreaker of Knowledge competition. He is among outstanding school students from 23 countries participating in the fully funded expedition organised by Russia’s state nuclear corporation, Rosatom.

The expedition follows the route Murmansk-North Pole-Franz Josef Land-Murmansk and is dedicated to the Year of the Unity of the Peoples of Russia.

Participants include Russian and international winners of the open selection process, members of the Rosatom Juniors engineering movement, winners of the Big Break All-Russian competition and prize winners of national and international science competitions and Olympiads. Also taking part is Ekaterina Malkova from Moscow, who achieved a record 500 marks in Russia’s Unified State Examination (EGE).

During the voyage, participants will explore the Arctic while gaining first-hand experience in science, nuclear technology, innovation and international cooperation through educational and interactive programmes aboard the nuclear-powered icebreaker.

“The Arctic is a place of strength, where the most ambitious ideas are born and brought to life. It attracts courageous and active people who are ready to build a better future,” Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev said in a statement.

“The Icebreaker of Knowledge is taking exactly these young people to the North Pole. We are proud that the world’s only nuclear-powered icebreaker fleet makes this opportunity possible,” he added.

Organised annually by Rosatom, the Icebreaker of Knowledge expedition provides talented students from around the world with a unique opportunity to experience the Arctic, learn about advanced nuclear technologies and foster international collaboration in science and innovation.
